People have been candy lovers for centuries. Candy is sweet and almost everyone loves that sweet taste. Yet candy hasn’t always existed. In prehistoric times, for example, there were no licorice candies. The first people on earth therefore snacked on fruit. Think of sweet berries, for example. Soon people discovered that you could also make things sweeter with honey. Then they learned how to make sugar from sugarcane. This created more and more possibilities to eat sweet things!
English licorice
Is the first real candy. Only from the sixteenth century was candy really made from sugar in Europe. This candy was mainly for the rich and was called ‘sugar work’. Later sugar was extracted from beets, but this was quite expensive. Sugar became cheaper when the special sugar beet was developed. Then huge sugar factories appeared, and with them huge candy factories. There was plenty of sugar and candy, so from that moment almost everyone could afford candy. Tasty, but there are also downsides...
Unhealthy
